常用用法

amount 用于表示“量”“額”，如重量、金額等。
amount of后一般接不可數(shù)名詞，有時(shí)也可接復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞，此名詞被視為某一“總量”或“綜述”。
短語(yǔ) in the amount of (總共為)可以 of 或 for 代之；to the amount (總共達(dá))可以 to 代之。但如接款項(xiàng)數(shù)字大的總數(shù)，一般用 in〔to〕 the amount of。

amount用作動(dòng)詞的基本意思是“合計(jì),共計(jì)”,引申可指“等同,接近”。
amount是不及物動(dòng)詞,常與介詞to連用。
amount后可接介詞to。The expenses amount to ￥50.
amount后也可接動(dòng)名詞，要注意不要與不定式混淆。That amounts to saying that he is a genius. saying不可改成say。
做名詞時(shí)，只能用在不可數(shù)名詞，如能說(shuō)a large amount of literature，不能說(shuō)a large amount of books。

這組詞的共同意思是“總數(shù)、總合”。其區(qū)別是：
aggregate指把數(shù)目的各個(gè)部分加在一起；amount指累積的結(jié)果；number指數(shù)字或東西相加所得的總數(shù)；sum指最后的總結(jié)果，表示截至現(xiàn)在的總數(shù), 還有增加的可能；total和whole都指合計(jì)的結(jié)果的全體，total常指大的數(shù)量，whole也含有各部分總和的意味。quantity主要表示物質(zhì)的量。

這兩個(gè)詞都表示“數(shù)量”。其區(qū)別在于:前者表示“數(shù)”,與復(fù)數(shù)名詞或代詞連用; 而后者表示“量”,與不可數(shù)名詞連用。例如:
A small number of people believe in ghosts.只有少數(shù)人相信有鬼。
A large amount of money was spent on books.一大筆錢花在了購(gòu)買圖書上。

這五個(gè)短語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞都是“總計(jì)”的意思,其差別很細(xì)微：
1.從構(gòu)成上說(shuō), add up to和count up to是動(dòng)副介型短語(yǔ); 而amount to, come to和run into是動(dòng)介型短語(yǔ)。
2.從主語(yǔ)上說(shuō), add up to和come to相同,均多為錢、賬單、數(shù)目等; amount to和run into的主語(yǔ)多為loss, cost, expense, debt, sum等名詞; 而count up to的主語(yǔ)則僅限It。例如:
Our hotel bill added up to〔amounted to,came to〕 300 dollars.我們的旅館費(fèi)共計(jì)300美元。
His debts amounted to〔ran into〕 over 3000 dollars.他的債務(wù)已高達(dá)3000多美元。
It counts up to 300 dollars.共計(jì)300美元。
3.從賓語(yǔ)上說(shuō), add up to, amount to, come to后一般接數(shù)字; 而count up to和run into后除可接數(shù)字外,還可接名詞。例如:
It counts up to a considerable sum.合計(jì)起來(lái)數(shù)目相當(dāng)可觀。
Losses run into six figures.損失高達(dá)6位數(shù)。
4.從使用場(chǎng)合上說(shuō), come to最通俗, count up to不常用。
