常用用法

door的基本意思是“門”,指樓、房間、碗櫥、壁櫥等建筑物或家具上的門,也可指“一家〔戶〕”“一棟房屋”。還可指“出入口,門口”,用于抽象意義可表示“通往…之路”,常與介詞to連用。表示“從…門進(jìn)來〔出去〕”可與介詞at或by連用。
door常與close, shut, open, lay, put, show等動詞連用構(gòu)成短語,多用于表達(dá)抽象意義。
at death's door的意思是“垂死”“接近死亡之日”; behind〔with〕 closed doors 的意思是“秘密地”。

這兩個短語的意思側(cè)重點(diǎn)不同:前者強(qiáng)調(diào)“在戶外,露天”; 而后者通常用于表示“在外面”,特別指在家庭、團(tuán)體、會議等的外面。例如:
We often have our food out of doors in summer.
夏天我們常在野外用餐。
The quarrels of their family were going on not only within doors, but sometimes without doors.
他們家庭的爭吵不但在家里進(jìn)行,有時也在外面進(jìn)行。

雖然這兩個詞都可譯成“門”,但二者之間有著明顯的區(qū)別,一般不可混用。door主要指樓、房間、碗櫥、壁櫥等建筑或家具上的門; 而gate通常指城墻、圍墻、院墻等的門,往往譯成“城門”“柵門”“閘門”等。試比較:
He stood within the door.
他站在室內(nèi)。(不是室外)
He stood within the gate.
他站在大門內(nèi)。(是室外)
He stood outside the door.
他站在室外。(有可能在院內(nèi))
He stood outside the gate.
他站在大門外。(不在院內(nèi))
注意:如果用于引申義或構(gòu)成復(fù)合詞時,這兩個詞有時可以通用。例如:
Their cooperation opened the door〔gate〕 to success.他們之間的合作為成功創(chuàng)造了條件。
That old man is a door〔gate〕 keeper.那位老人是看門的。
I found him sitting in the door〔gate〕 way to enjoy the cool.我發(fā)現(xiàn)他坐在門口乘涼。
He knew then he was at the door〔gate〕 of death.那時他知道自己已奄奄一息。
