常用用法

fault表示具體的“缺點(diǎn),錯(cuò)誤,缺陷,故障”時(shí),可用作可數(shù)名詞; 泛指抽象的“過失,過錯(cuò)”“責(zé)任”時(shí),是不可數(shù)名詞。
短語to a fault指好得過分以至于要變壞了,它常與正面意思的形容詞或副詞連用。
find fault with中的fault是不可數(shù)名詞,表示“挑剔”,也可說find much fault with; find a fault〔faults〕 in中的fault是可數(shù)名詞,表示“看出…的缺點(diǎn)”,也可說find many faults in。
短語at fault表示“不知所措的”，be at fault表示“出毛病”，in fault表示“有過失的”，to a fault表示“過分的”，注意不可與指“不好”的詞連用，如careless。She is cautious to a fault. 她過分謹(jǐn)慎了。
find fault with表示“責(zé)備，挑剔”，屬于固定搭配。He found fault with my composition. 他挑剔我的作文不好。
fault后可加that從句。It was my fault that I had written the wrong address. 寫錯(cuò)了信的地址，那是我的錯(cuò)。
介詞再加no fault of sb可表示為“不是某人的錯(cuò)”。The cup broke through no fault of the girl. 打碎杯子并不是這個(gè)女孩的錯(cuò)。

這兩個(gè)詞都有“缺點(diǎn),缺陷”的意思。其區(qū)別是：
defect強(qiáng)調(diào)不影響全局,完美不足,而fault強(qiáng)調(diào)不十分嚴(yán)重,無傷大雅; 用于人時(shí), defect多指人體器官上的缺陷,而fault多指道德行為的缺點(diǎn); 用于物時(shí), defect指易于察覺的缺陷, fault則指功能方面的缺陷。例如:
He has some defects in his eyesight.他的視力有缺陷。
I bought the cloth cheap because there is a small defect in it.這布我買得便宜,因?yàn)樯厦嬗袀€(gè)小疵點(diǎn)。
Snobbishness was his main fault.他的主要缺點(diǎn)是勢利眼。
I don't mean to praise myself.I have my fault.我并不是要表揚(yáng)自己,我也有我的過錯(cuò)。
His only fault is that he lacks ambition.他唯一缺點(diǎn)就是沒有雄心壯志。
This accident is due to a fault in the electrical circuit.這次事故是由電路故障引起的。
There is a fault in the machine.這機(jī)器有毛病。

這四個(gè)詞都有“缺點(diǎn),錯(cuò)誤”的意思。其區(qū)別是：
1.fault, flaw主要指“毛病,缺點(diǎn)”; mistake, error主要指“錯(cuò)誤”。
2.fault多指性格、心智狀態(tài)、情緒、行為或習(xí)慣中的“缺點(diǎn)”。例如:
The dean demands perfection in others, but cannot see faults in himself.系主任要求別人完美無缺,卻看不到自己的缺點(diǎn)。
3.error可指任何錯(cuò)誤,也可指筆誤,印刷上或計(jì)算上的錯(cuò)誤。例如:
Please pardon any error that you may discover in my letter.請?jiān)徳谖业男胖心惆l(fā)現(xiàn)的一些錯(cuò)誤。
This book contains a lot of printer's errors.這本書有很多印刷錯(cuò)誤。
4.mistake指判斷或理解方面的錯(cuò)誤,或是由于缺乏思考或疏忽而造成的錯(cuò)誤。例如:
I used your ink by mistake.我用錯(cuò)了你的墨水。
He made some spelling mistakes in his test paper.在考試試卷中,他犯了拼寫錯(cuò)誤。
