常用用法

gate的基本意思是“門(mén),柵欄門(mén)”,指安裝在圍繞街巷或住宅的圍墻上的門(mén),也可指到里院的通路,可譯作“城門(mén)、籬笆門(mén)、圍墻門(mén)、大門(mén)、(圍地的)門(mén)或門(mén)口”。引申可作“嘴,口”或“門(mén)徑”解。是可數(shù)名詞。
gate也可指機(jī)場(chǎng)候車(chē)室的“登機(jī)口”。
gate還可表示運(yùn)動(dòng)會(huì)、展覽會(huì)等的“觀(guān)眾人數(shù),門(mén)票收入”,作“觀(guān)眾人數(shù)”解時(shí)多用在英式英語(yǔ)中。

雖然這兩個(gè)詞都可譯成“門(mén)”,但二者之間有著明顯的區(qū)別,一般不可混用。door主要指樓、房間、碗櫥、壁櫥等建筑或家具上的門(mén); 而gate通常指城墻、圍墻、院墻等的門(mén),往往譯成“城門(mén)”“柵門(mén)”“閘門(mén)”等。試比較:
He stood within the door.
他站在室內(nèi)。(不是室外)
He stood within the gate.
他站在大門(mén)內(nèi)。(是室外)
He stood outside the door.
他站在室外。(有可能在院內(nèi))
He stood outside the gate.
他站在大門(mén)外。(不在院內(nèi))
注意:如果用于引申義或構(gòu)成復(fù)合詞時(shí),這兩個(gè)詞有時(shí)可以通用。例如:
Their cooperation opened the door〔gate〕 to success.他們之間的合作為成功創(chuàng)造了條件。
That old man is a door〔gate〕 keeper.那位老人是看門(mén)的。
I found him sitting in the door〔gate〕 way to enjoy the cool.我發(fā)現(xiàn)他坐在門(mén)口乘涼。
He knew then he was at the door〔gate〕 of death.那時(shí)他知道自己已奄奄一息。

這兩個(gè)詞意思并不相同。gate通常指城門(mén)、閘門(mén)等,或指學(xué)校、工廠(chǎng)、體育場(chǎng)等的大門(mén); 而gateway一般指由房子通往大門(mén)(gate)或大門(mén)通往外界的“通道”“門(mén)戶(hù)”“大門(mén)口”。gateway還可引申指辦事的“方法”“手段”等。例如:
He commanded that all the gates be shut.他命令關(guān)閉所有的大門(mén)。
Don't stand there blocking the gateway!不要站在那兒擋住門(mén)口!
Hard work is the gateway to success.努力工作是通往成功之路。
