常用用法

principal用作形容詞的意思是“最重要的,主要的,首要的”,用于人時指其起的作用最大,而不指職位最高; 用于物時,指其在重要性上優(yōu)于他物,起決定作用。
principal無比較級和最高級形式。
principal同principle的比較：兩者的發(fā)音相同。principal作為形容詞時，意思為“主要的”“最重要的”。 principal作為名詞時意為“校長”。而principle的意思為“科學(xué)定律或者是到個規(guī)范”。What's your principal reason for wanting to be a writer？If you want to leave early you'll have to ask the Principal.He's a boy with very strong principles.
principal作為校長時，各地區(qū)用法不盡相同：在英國常表示牛津（Oxford)和劍橋（Cambridge)大學(xué)的若干學(xué)院（college)的院長，或是若干大學(xué)的校長。在美國僅僅只是表示中學(xué)或小學(xué)校長。而在蘇格蘭表示的是大學(xué)校長。

這組詞均可表示“首要的”“重要的”。其區(qū)別在于:
1.capital, principal和chief既可修飾人,也可修飾物, main多修飾物,很少修飾人。例如:
He acted the principal hero in the play.他在那出戲中演主角。
It is allowed that pronunciation is one of the principal things in English.大家都認(rèn)為發(fā)音是英語的一個重要方面。
We must focus on our sales force as the chief means of improving trade. 我們必須集中精力把廣開銷路作為促進(jìn)貿(mào)易的主要手段來抓。

2.capital指“一流的”,但不是“第一的”; chief指物時是“最重要的”,指人時是“職位最高的”; main和principal既可指“一流的”,也可指“第一的”。例如:
