常用用法

festival的意思是“節(jié)日”,多指民俗或宗教節(jié)日,用作專有名詞時(shí),其前須加定冠詞; 有時(shí)還可指音樂、戯劇、電影等會(huì)縯性的節(jié)日。
一般來說，由定語加名詞festival組成的節(jié)日，在表示的時(shí)候都需加冠定詞，如the Spring Festival（春節(jié)）。

這五個(gè)詞都有“假日”的意思。其區(qū)別在於:holiday來源於宗教的節(jié)日、假日,是普通用詞,多用於英式英語中,指的是一個(gè)人在一年中不乾工作的那段時(shí)間,也可用來表示一兩天的短假期; day表示法定節(jié)日,多用於專有名詞中; festival指民俗或宗教節(jié)日,竝含有定期歡度的意味; leave指政府工作人員或軍人的假期; vacation用於大學(xué)停課放假長達(dá)多周的假日或法院停止開庭時(shí)間,在美式英語中,凡是較長時(shí)間的休假都可用這個(gè)詞。例如:
August and September are the months of the year during which most English people take their holidays.一年中8、9兩個(gè)月是大多數(shù)英國人休假的月份。
We celebrate National Day every year.我們每年都慶祝國慶節(jié)。
Christmas is one of the festivals of the Christian church.聖誕節(jié)是基督教的節(jié)日之一。
The soldiers will go home on leave once every two years.士兵們每兩年廻家休假一次。
Three vacations occur in the course of the year, viz, two weeks at Christmas, ten days at Easter and the usual two months in summer.一年中有三個(gè)假期,即聖誕節(jié)兩周,複活節(jié)十天以及通常的兩個(gè)月暑假。
