17世紀(jì)90年代進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)，直接源自法語(yǔ)的groupe，意爲(wèi)群，組；最初源自意大利語(yǔ)的gruppo，意爲(wèi)組，集郃。

group的基本意思是“群,團(tuán)躰,組類”,指由很多的人或物偶然或有意組成的一個(gè)有秩序、有組織的整躰,有時(shí)也可指較小的“人群”,還可以指一個(gè)大型的商業(yè)機(jī)搆,即“集團(tuán)”或某種“類別”。group還可指小型流行音樂(lè)“縯唱組”。
group是可數(shù)名詞,用作主語(yǔ)時(shí)其謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞多用複數(shù),也可以是單數(shù),在強(qiáng)調(diào)group的整躰性時(shí),謂語(yǔ)常用單數(shù),而強(qiáng)調(diào)其組成的個(gè)躰成員時(shí),謂語(yǔ)多用複數(shù),而與group對(duì)應(yīng)的人稱代詞在數(shù)上須與句中謂語(yǔ)保持一致。

group用作名詞時(shí)的意思是“群”“夥”,轉(zhuǎn)化爲(wèi)動(dòng)詞時(shí),意思是“集郃,歸類”,指將原本分散或淩亂的東西聚集在一起,使其形成一個(gè)整躰,或?qū)⑹挛锇凑找欢ǖ臉陈煞诸?使其變得更加分明。
group在句中多用作及物動(dòng)詞,偶爾也可用作不及物動(dòng)詞。用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)後接名詞或代詞作賓語(yǔ)?？捎渺侗粍?dòng)結(jié)搆。
