常用用法

holiday的基本意思是“假期”,指源於宗教的“節(jié)日,假日”,也可指不用去上班、上學(xué)等的“休假日”“假期”,還可指“出外度假時(shí)期”。其單數(shù)形式指包括含一天或一次的假期,複數(shù)形式指一次以上或一天以上的假期。
holiday作“休假期”解時(shí)常用於複數(shù)形式,是英國用法。
holidays如作整躰看待,可作單數(shù)処理。

這五個(gè)詞都有“假日”的意思。其區(qū)別在於:holiday來源於宗教的節(jié)日、假日,是普通用詞,多用於英式英語中,指的是一個(gè)人在一年中不乾工作的那段時(shí)間,也可用來表示一兩天的短假期; day表示法定節(jié)日,多用於專有名詞中; festival指民俗或宗教節(jié)日,竝含有定期歡度的意味; leave指政府工作人員或軍人的假期; vacation用於大學(xué)停課放假長(zhǎng)達(dá)多周的假日或法院停止開庭時(shí)間,在美式英語中,凡是較長(zhǎng)時(shí)間的休假都可用這個(gè)詞。例如:
August and September are the months of the year during which most English people take their holidays.一年中8、9兩個(gè)月是大多數(shù)英國人休假的月份。
We celebrate National Day every year.我們每年都慶祝國慶節(jié)。
Christmas is one of the festivals of the Christian church.聖誕節(jié)是基督教的節(jié)日之一。
The soldiers will go home on leave once every two years.士兵們每?jī)赡陱h家休假一次。
Three vacations occur in the course of the year, viz, two weeks at Christmas, ten days at Easter and the usual two months in summer.一年中有三個(gè)假期,即聖誕節(jié)兩周,複活節(jié)十天以及通常的兩個(gè)月暑假。
