possession的基本意思是“佔有”“持有”“擁有”,是抽象名詞,不可數(shù)。possession引申可表示“領(lǐng)地”“屬地”“殖民地”。
possession還可作“財物”解,一般都用複數(shù)形式。
表示“某人擁有某物”是be in possession of或(be) in sb's possession,“某物爲某人所擁有”是be in the possession of。前者不用定冠詞the,後者則必用定冠詞the。
