sting的基本意思是“螫; 刺; 刺痛”,指蜜蜂、馬蜂或蠍等螫人。引申可作“激怒”“使感到難受或苦悶”解,指因受到別人的冷淡而懊惱或因受到良心譴責而感到坐立不安或悔恨。在口語中, sting也可表示“騙,敲…的竹杠”。
sting可用作及物動詞,也可用作不及物動詞。用作及物動詞時接名詞或代詞作賓語,可用於被動結搆。
sting後接介詞for表示“爲…敲竹杠”或“爲…曏(某人)要高價”; 後接介詞into表示“激勵某人去做某事”。
sting用作不及物動詞時後接介詞from或with表示“因…而感到疼痛”。
