over作為介詞的用法
1、在……上方（垂直）；在……上面
There's a bridge over the river. 河上有座橋.
Spread a cloth over the table. 給桌子上鋪塊布.
A lamp hung over us. 我們頭上吊著一盞燈.
The magistrate looked at the merchant from head to foot, and a faint smile passed over his face.
那個(gè)官員把商人從頭到腳看了一遍，一絲淡淡的微笑掠過(guò)他的臉上。
You can't wear a blue jacket over that shirt—it'll look terrible.
你不能把一件藍(lán)夾克穿在那件襯衫的外面，太難看了。

3、（數(shù)目、程度）在……以上，超過(guò)：（=more than）
He is over fifty. 他五十多歲。
He spoke (for) over an hour. 他講了一個(gè)多小時(shí)。
The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. 長(zhǎng)城有兩千多年的歷史。
4、越過(guò)，從……邊緣往下：
She looked over the fence to the distance.
她雙眼越過(guò)籬笆向遠(yuǎn)處望去。
He jumped over the fence and disappeared in a moment.
他跳過(guò)籬笆，一會(huì)兒就不見(jiàn)了。
It winds its way from west to east , across desert, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea.
長(zhǎng)城自西向東蜿蜒迂回，過(guò)沙漠，越高山，跨峽谷，最后直達(dá)海邊。
On the way home, I talked over the shoulder to David.
回家的路上，我回過(guò)頭跟大衛(wèi)說(shuō)話(huà)。
The child fell over the balcony. 孩子從陽(yáng)臺(tái)邊上掉了下去。
5、（時(shí)間）在……期間；直到……過(guò)完：
American English has changed over the centuries, too.
幾個(gè)世紀(jì)以來(lái)，美國(guó)英語(yǔ)也起了變化。
In this way over several days the artist and his mouse became good friends.
就這樣過(guò)了幾天，畫(huà)家和老鼠成了好朋友。
It was difficult for me to do any interesting “collecting” over the last few months.

We had a good laugh over the cross-talk. 那段相聲讓我們笑得不輕。
They mourn over the old man's death. 他們哀悼老人的去世。
“Someone must be very unhappy over the loss,” she said. “My son, you must return this to the owner.”
“有人丟東西肯定非常地不高興，”她說(shuō)，“我兒，你得把這個(gè)還給它的主人。”
7、通過(guò)……的通訊途徑：
He heard the exciting news over (on) the radio.
他從收音機(jī)上聽(tīng)到了那個(gè)令人興奮的消息。
People at the shop will show you the thing you're interested in right over the phone.
商店里的人剛好可以通過(guò)電話(huà)讓你看一看你感興趣的東西。
