1300年左右進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)，直接源自古法語(yǔ)的atendre，意為期望，注意；最初源自拉丁語(yǔ)的attendere：ad (去） + tendere (伸展），意為朝一方向努力伸展。

attend的本意是指心里經(jīng)常性地想著〔做〕某事,現(xiàn)代英語(yǔ)中主要用于表示“參加(會(huì)議、集會(huì)、典禮、婚禮、追悼會(huì)等)”,有時(shí)也指上學(xué)、聽(tīng)課、聽(tīng)報(bào)告等。它強(qiáng)調(diào)的是動(dòng)作,即聽(tīng)或看,為正式書(shū)面用語(yǔ)。
attend作“專(zhuān)心,注意”解時(shí),多指對(duì)書(shū)本、圖表、課業(yè)、命令、事物、事件等的注意。其后常接to。
attend還可表示“伴隨”,含“照顧”“陪伴”的意思,陪伴者處于從屬地位,有時(shí)表示一種服務(wù)或禮貌、殷勤,有時(shí)表示跟在人或事物的后面而行。作“照顧”解時(shí),主要指專(zhuān)職工作性質(zhì)的照顧。
attend用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)接簡(jiǎn)單賓語(yǔ),可用于被動(dòng)結(jié)構(gòu)。用于不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)可接介詞to表示“致力于”“注意”“照顧”,接介詞on表示“照顧”“伴隨”。
attend和attend at均表示“出席于……”的意思，不過(guò)習(xí)慣上更偏向于使用attend；
attend和attend upon(on)均表示“照料，伺候”的意思，但是在特指醫(yī)生或護(hù)士的照料時(shí)，習(xí)慣上常用attend；
attend to表示“注意于”的意思。I will attend to the matter soon. 我一會(huì)會(huì)注意下這個(gè)事情的。

If you attend to something, you deal with it. If you attend to someone who is hurt or injured, you care for them.
