常用用法
- what用作疑問代詞時(shí),其基本意思是“什么,什么東西,什么事情”,用作疑問句,為特殊疑問句的一個(gè)標(biāo)志。
- what作關(guān)系代詞時(shí),其含意是“所…的事(物)”?？捎脕硪龑?dǎo)主語(yǔ)從句,表語(yǔ)從句,賓語(yǔ)從句或同位語(yǔ)從句。當(dāng)引導(dǎo)主語(yǔ)從句,其所指的名詞必定是單數(shù)。主語(yǔ)是單數(shù)時(shí),謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞一般是單數(shù),但有時(shí)因謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞之后有復(fù)數(shù)名詞,謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞也可用復(fù)數(shù); what引導(dǎo)賓語(yǔ)從句時(shí),常置于謂語(yǔ)之后,用作表語(yǔ)時(shí),放在系動(dòng)詞之后。what還可引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句,意思是“不管…”。還可接動(dòng)詞不定式短語(yǔ)。
- what有時(shí)候可解釋為whatever，表示“不管怎么樣”。I gave him what help I could. 我給他任何我能給的幫助。
- what所引導(dǎo)的句子中，判斷從句謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用單數(shù)還是復(fù)數(shù)，看what后跟的詞是單數(shù)還是復(fù)數(shù)。What is required is some good books. 第一句中what后跟is，固required后的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用單數(shù)is。第二句中what后跟are，固required后的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用復(fù)數(shù)are。
- 有時(shí)，what可同時(shí)用于主格和賓格，并且表示兩個(gè)不同的事物。I do not know what he is and does. 我不知道他是誰，也不知道他做什么。
- What有時(shí)候可等同于that，those或 which。What I am interested in you may not be interested in. 我感興趣的，你可能不感興趣。
- What既可作疑問代詞，也可作關(guān)系代詞。He asked me what I wanted. (疑問代詞) He gave me what I wanted.(關(guān)系代詞)
- What在作關(guān)系代詞時(shí)，可表示“下文所講的話”。He went, and, what is more surprising, actually won the prize. 他去了，而且更令人驚訝的是，他還獲獎(jiǎng)了。
- and what not表示“以及其他”，使用時(shí)在其前面一般至少有兩個(gè)或兩個(gè)以上的名詞，偶爾可以是形容詞。He sent me books, magazines, newspapers, pictures, and what not. They were then generally dirty, ignorant, superstitious, and what not.
